Performance Calculator

Speed Calculator

Calculate speed from distance and time in MPH, feet per second, and meters per second. Use it to compare sprint pace, training drills, and movement benchmarks across sports.

Your Measurement

Enter a distance greater than zero. The calculator will convert it into feet before calculating speed.

Enter a time greater than zero. Decimals are allowed for both inputs.

How To Measure Speed

1. Measure The Distance

Mark a straight path and record the total distance traveled. You can use yards, feet, meters, or miles depending on the type of test you are doing.

2. Measure The Time

Use a stopwatch, timing gate, or timing app to record how long the athlete takes to cover the chosen distance. Keep the method consistent for repeat testing.

About The Calculation

Distance is converted to feet, then divided by time in seconds to get feet per second.

MPH = feet per second × 0.681818.

Meters per second = feet per second × 0.3048.

Example: 40 yards in 5.00 seconds = 16.36 mph.

Tips To Improve Speed Testing

Use The Same Setup

Test on the same surface and with the same starting procedure to keep results consistent.

Keep The Path Straight

Straight-line movement gives you the cleanest speed reading and the easiest comparisons.

Repeat Multiple Trials

Run the test several times and compare the best effort with your average result.

Track Progress

Use the calculator over time to monitor speed improvements across training cycles.
